The Fox squirrel is the largest of North American species. Scientific name Sciurus Niger. The squirrels preferred habitat is open hard wood areas. The squirrels color can be rusty yellow, grizzled with a feathery tail curled over its back. The squirrel’s weight is typically 1½ to 3 pounds and 19 to 28 inches in length. A squirrel’s diet varies from nuts, fungi, roots, fruits, seeds, and sometimes insects. Squirrels are typically active during the day except for the Flying squirrel, they are active at night. Squirrels reproduce in mid winter and in early spring. In February to June 2 to 4 young are born weighing less than an ounce at birth. It is possible for squirrels to have 1 to 2 litters a year. The juveniles will start to crack nuts in about ten weeks. In the wild a squirrel may live up to 6 years if not killed by predators or other natural causes. In the fall the squirrel will be out and about most of the day when nuts ripen and fall to the ground. The squirrel will dig shallow holes to stash a nut for winter storage. They will do this hundreds of times. In the winter months his nose will lead him back to its buried treasure. Squirrels will also visit corn fields and carry ears of corn back to its favorite branch and dine on it.

Fox squirrels, Gray squirrels, Red squirrels, and Flying squirrels, are categorized as tree squirrels and in the rodent family. These 4 types of squirrels are the most common problem squirrels here in Michigan. Squirrels chew their way into soffits, vents, roof lines and siding, ending up in the attic or a wall cavity in your home. The squirrel can cause urine staining on ceilings; can cause foul odors from their toilet areas in the attic. It has also been known that squirrels will chew house wiring and cause a possible fire. Squirrels will raid bird feeders on a regular basis; it’s an easy food source. But some measures can be taken to squirrel proof the bird feeder. Squirrels will feed in common areas; this is why you will see several squirrels eating from the same bird feeder. Also several individuals may den together in winter, but they are not a very social animal.
